World Music Workshops for 2010-2011 - Secondary
  • World music for GCSE
An intense one day (or extended) session to give students practical experience of the most significant aspects of African, Indian, Caribbean, Latin and Far-Eastern music. The use of many authentic instruments and techniques will firmly establish the key musical concepts and timbres.

  • Composing – the global vision
How to incorporate ideas from World music into composing work at any level. Fusion music in many styles is producing the most innovative and vital sounds in jazz and popular music, and many contemporary ‘classical’ composers are finding inspiration in World sounds. Using the characteristic timbres and structural methods of other cultures can feed the imagination of students and produce exciting, innovative compositional work.

  • Ways into Improvising
Improvisation is integral to the music of many cultures, but there are many different ways in which the concept is viewed. By examining in detail some key aspects of improvisation in important World styles, students can find new and inspiring ways of working, which could then also lead to ideas for more fixed compositions. There is life beyond the ‘Blues’ scale!

  • Minimalism and Aleatoric music
Practical experience of the key concepts involved in arguably the most influential and accessible 20th century musical style, with strong connections to World music. Students are offered ideas for performance along the lines suggested by Terry Riley and others, perhaps leading to an ensemble performance similar to the seminal 1964 work “In C.“

  • Presentations or Workshops from the Primary range
Many of the themes from the Primary range are suited to Secondary level with appropriate adjustment in style i.e. less emphasis on vocal participation if this suits the group. The language and references used are similarly adapted to an older age group.
