James Hugonin’s paintings, which are found in major
collections across the world, are the result of many months of intense
and meticulous work. They are composed of thousands of tiny cells of
colour, forming intricate sequences held within a precise silver-point
grid. Subtle changes occur over time within the paintings - the
result of shifts in ambient light and the altered perceptions of the
observer.
Several contemporary composers, including Gavin Bryars and Alwynne
Pritchard have written pieces in response to Hugonin’s paintings.
“For James Hugonin” was commissioned by the artist in 1997 to
coincide with a major international exhibition in Cornwall – “A
Quality of Light” - which included a workshop and performance led by
Ian Booth at the Tate St. Ives.

The compositional processes in the music found on this CD closely
referenced those of the artist, in an attempt to find aural
equivalents to the visual experience of the paintings. This
